Two GREAT Jazz Shows @ Climate Theater SF

ELECTRO-ACOUSTIC & GLITCH POP

CLIMATE THEATRE MUSIC BOX SERIES
The Place to HEAR the Music

Oh my goodness! So many things to tell you!

First, the Music Box Series has a new website. This is an added advantage over the MySpace page because (1) you won't be inundated with ads, and more importantly (2) it's super-simple to link people's names to their web pages so that you can sample their music and see their smiling faces before you come to any show.

Second, I'm pleased to present an ASTOUNDING evening of electronic and electronic-influenced music. For the acoustic purists let me say that the beauty of music is the ability to take found objects and make music out of them. Sometimes people play musical saws and hammer on pieces of metal they found in the junkyard. Or they play jugs or string a rope on a washtub and call it a washtub bass. So, why not use electronics the same way? Why not experiment?

--David Kaye, curator of the Music Box Series

Here's the lowdown on Michael Straus, the featured performer this Tuesday:

====================================================

Next Show

Climate Theater
285 9th Street @ Folsom
San Francisco

MICHAEL STRAUS
Saxophonist Michael Straus' (b. 1983, New Orleans) abilities and dedication to the performance of new music have led to a variety of engagements at venues ranging from Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center and New York City's The Stone to Italy's Festival Internazionale del Sassofono. His strong commitment to today's music, coupled with his close work alongside composers has resulted in over twenty new compositions by both emerging and established composers Halim El-Dabh, Matthew Burtner, Peter V. Swendsen, Per Bloland, Vitor Rua and Liduino Pitombeira among several others. Recent premieres include everything from large chamber works to solo compositions incorporating multi-channel audio and film projection.

As a frequent composer of electroacoustic music, Michael's compositions have been heard throughout the United States and Canada. His numerous recordings as a saxophonist, didgeridoo player and composer can be heard on SEAMUS, New Tertian and The Walter's Art Museum record labels.

Michael is an Enrico Di Giovanni Scholarship Recipient and winner of several other accolades including two Helen Gold and Derryl Haymon Scholarships and a Peabody Career Development Grant.

45ISDISTANCE
[45isdistance] has been described as one of the most innovative glitch-pop bands in the Bay Area, "blending surreal electronic textures with symphonic instruments, generating unexpected atmospheres of warm lo-fi and enthusiastic post-rock." 2 guys from Chile and Italy. Idea of the sound of hardware failure, warm and sweet lo-fi, experimental sounds, symphonic build ups and intimacy. JuanPablo: Machines, Acoustic Drums, Keyboards, Trumpet. Stefano: Machines, Guitar, Keyboard.

====================================================

Following Show

Tuesday, May 6, 2008, 8:00pm
COLIN STETSON
DARREN JOHNSTON
SCOTT AMENDOLA

Cover $10 to $15 sliding scale
Climate Theater
285 9th Street @ Folsom
San Francisco

I once managed Colin's band, Transmission, an avant garde jazz band in the Thomas Chapin tradition. He's the single person who brought me back to appreciating jazz. Colin has a unique sax voice. His work has been featured on the David Letterman Show, in sessions and on tour with Tom Waits, Sinead O'Connor, Burning Spear and Medeski, Martin, and Wood, Anthony Braxton and TV On The Radio. He is currently touring with the band, ARCADE FIRE, playing clarinet, bass clarinet, french horn, cornet and bass saxophone.

Quote: "Michigan native Colin Stetson is like the Roger Federer of avant-garde instrumental music. While the Swiss tennis player has changed the way we think of tennis, Stetson is redefining the possibilities of woodwind and brass instruments. Equally at home on the flute, French horn, clarinet, and saxophone, Stetson's musical innovations bring to mind the work of Fred Frith, Henry Kaiser and John Zorn. "

Joining Colin will be Darran Johnston and Scott Amendola.

About Scott (from the NY Times): "The drummer Scott Amendola could fairly be described as a jazz musician with an investment in the imperatives of groove. He seems to come by his eclecticism naturally: when rock, bebop and Afrobeat take turns surfacing in his music, they do so in a way that feels loose and unforced. "

About Darren: "As a performer, Johnston has performed, and/or recorded with such innovative musicians and composers as guitarist Fred Frith, clarinetist Don Byron, bassist Marcus Shelby, bassist Herbie Lewis, the ROVA Saxophone Quartet, clarinetist Ben Goldberg, and others. He was recently listed last June by Downbeat Magazine as one of “25 Trumpeters of the Future.”
MUSIC BOX SERIES

Mingus Big Band This Week! 4/22 - 4/27

If you're a fan of Charles Mingus and you've never heard this band, you won't believe your ears! This legacy band, put together by Mingus' widow, Sue, features all Mingus compositions in big band orchestral arrangements - some of them from Mingus' original pen, some from his original arrangers like Sy Johnson, Gunther Schuller, and John Stubblefield, and some from the talented band members who've studied and played his music for years who stay true to his style. Trust me, you'll LOVE this show.
of February! The show is presented and hosted by
Melanie O'Reilly a truly delightful Celtic singer from
Ireland who is based in Berkeley and a visiting
scholar at UC Berkeley. Her show is entitled "Jazz On
The Bay" and this segment will feature Women jazz
musicians from the Bay area. I feel honored to be a
part of it! My segment of the show will include a cut
from my performance last year at Anna's Jazz Island
that some of you may remember was a big hit:
"Polkadots and Moonbeams!" More information to follow
including how to listen on line!

Talk Show Live!

My adventures in radio continue with a special guest
appearance on San Francisco's newest and most original
podcast radio show, "Talk Show Live!" I will be
singing some "Not Exactly Valentine's Day" songs with
the wonderful Cafe Americain, led by Ned Boynton on
guitar! Here is the information reprinted from their
newsletter:

Join us on February 11 for our "Not Exactly Valentines
Day" Show ! Some people love it, some people hate it.
February 11 is not exactly Valentine's Day, so we've
got a show for you that's both sweet and sour,
featuring:

*Writer/performer/local favorite BETH LISICK, fresh
off the road from her book tour for her latest entry
on the New York Times best-seller list, Helping Me
Help Myself. If you've listened to the radio at all in
the last month, you've already heard Beth talk about
her year of experimenting with self-help gurus and
programs. But we haven't heard anyone ask her how she
morphed from SF slam poetry bad girl into NPR media
darling. We're going to try to find out more --and
we've also convinced Beth to perform a number for us
(maybe one of the greatest hits from her previous
band, The Beth Lisick Ordeal).

* Charles Chocolates founder CHUCK SIEGEL, a man who
loves his work, which he summarizes as "making people
happy." The rest of the world has to settle for
watching Chuck share his super-premium, handmade
gourmet chocolate with Martha Stewart on her February
5 TV show, but the Willy Wonka of the Bay Area will be
bringing our audience not exactly Valentine's Day
samples. And if we get our way, Chuck will tell us if
the real reason he's so happy is because it's true
that "chocolate is the new sex". . .

*Musical guest, jazz singer VICKI BURNS, who's been
performing her soulful and romantic take on jazz
standards in the Bay Area since 1989. Vicki's promised
some appropriate musical commentary on Valentine's
Day. If you haven't had the opportunity to hear her
perform at Enrico's, Cosmopolitan, Flytrap, Downtown,
the Claremont or any of the other top jazz venues
where Vicki appears, you are in for a treat.

Vicki will be performing with the TSL house band, CAFE
AMERICAIN. Our audience favorite gypsy-jazz combo will
be on before, during and after the show

*Plus, a special not-exactly Valentine's Day
performance by our host, KURT BODDEN.

So be our Not Exactly Valentine's Day date -- or bring
your own!

Reserve your table in advance by buying online
Our best tables get reserved by advance ticket buyers
before the show. That's especially true now that we're
serving dinner and snacks --along with the usual
drinks-- downstairs in the club. Caffe Macaroni Sciue
Sciue has two menus for our audience: a special
prix-fixe deal (offered between 7-8 only) and an ala
carte light supper menu (including pizza and
sandwiches) available all night. You can also buy a
bottle of wine or prosecco for your table rather than
individual drinks --just ask your waitress.

While we will always try to hold enough tickets at the
door for walk-ins, your best bet is to order tickets
online through the website by February 10 and get a
priority reserved table at the show (we'll hold it
until 7:45 pm). Come on down when the doors open at 7
pm to mingle and relax over dinner during Cafe
Americain's pre-show set. If last time was any
indication, the party is going to start early -- and
go late -- from now on!

Logistical Details

* Doors open at 7:00. Come early to grab your table,
relax over a drink or dinner, and enjoy the band's
opening set.

* The interview part of the show runs from 8:00 to
9:20.

* After the show, hang out with us at the after-party
until 10 or so. The bar stays open, the band keeps
playing, and we all get to meet one another. We'll
have a drawing for free tickets and other goodies. . .
and maybe surprise guests!

Location

The Purple Onion, located at 140 Columbus Avenue in
North Beach, is one of San Francisco's most celebrated
venues, a hub of music and comedy during the Beat era.
Lenny Bruce, Woody Allen, Jonathan Winters, and the
Smothers Brothers all performed at this intimate
cellar club. Phyllis Diller and the Kingston Trio
began their careers here. There's on-street parking
and three parking garages within sight of the club.

************************************************

Here are the other great venues where I will be
performing this month! I hope to see you soon!

Little Saigon!

I will be returning to this delightful gem of a venue
on Friday, February 8th. Please join me for the
finest Vietnamese cuisine and some sweet, hot jazz by
the Vicki Burns Duo with the fabulous Jeff Massanari
on guitar!

The Music is from 5-9:00pm with no cover but believe
me you will want to make dinner reservations, the food
is simply fantastic! Here is a recent review:

Anyone in their 50s and single?

I thought I'd check to see if there are any women in their 50s living in the East Bay, preferably, who love jazz and can go hear some live occasionally with me. I'm single, 56, live in Oakland. I enjoy lots of kinds of music. I don't generally have anyone who can go out to hear live music with me. All my friends are married, have children, live too far out, are both working and going to school, or whatever. I'd like to go to Yoshi's or to Zellerbach Hall for performances, or to Anna's. I might possibly drive to San Francisco, but that's a bit of a stretch for me because of parking difficulties, the extra costs, etc.

I need a single galpal who can afford to go out occasionally!

anyone here? sound off on jazz tastes!

Cheers! Just wondering what you folks like.... is this bored dead because SF jazz is dead? I doubt that very much.... but it depends on what we call jazz. tradionalists can sit and fight about ragtime, gypsy, swing, etc....

and then there are those who think it is much broader... with the modern stylings of a lounge jazz revival (Dimitri from Paris), to swing style like Koop, and other amazing people like Norwegian's Espen Horne and his slough of Bobby Hughes concoctions.

So... what do we like? Name your jazz, and possibly your fave club for jazzy stuff?

I dig Rassella's. I dig Mojito for a couple acts that pass through. Any opinions?

Okay... so I haven't been coming here to tell you, my people, about the badass jazz hitting the area...

Last thursday at Bimbo's was Koop, Swedish electronic duo that brought a 7 piece to play some of the best electro-swing era jazz I have ever seen live.

then Alice Russell, from Quantic's Soul Orchestra, was at Mojito on Friday.

HOW CAN WE NOT INFORM!!! I am so sorry... and for one will try to post more groovy stuff here.

Did anyone go to either of these events?

Anyone know of any others?

Doin It To Death

Ladies and Gentlemen:

I am so pleased to announce my triumphant return to…dang, that sounded a bit blech! Let me start over.

Good friends:

You’ll be happy to hear…like I’m expecting you all to slap me on the back or something. Ok, I’ll get it right this time.

Party People:

We’re going to have a funky good time at KFJC 89.7fm (http://kfjc.org), this Thursday, May 3rd from midnight to midnight, with the long anticipated 24 hour “Doing It To Death, A James Brown Birthday Special”, featuring live & rare recordings, interviews, dance contests, fashion show, testimonials and tributes. Hosted by Myself, Spliff Skankin, Hawkeye Joe, KJ Dweller, Mr. Lucky & more.

I’ll be on from 8pm to midnight, bringing the show to its absolute climax with some rare JB’s James Brown instrumentals, and some serious live James Brown you have not heard anywhere!

I hosted several radio shows at KFJC between 1988 and 1997 under the air name Reverend Dah Wave, including a mid-day Jazz/Soul/Funk show, where every day from noon to noon-thirty it was “The Brown Bag Lunch”, 30 minutes of Mr. Please, Please, Please itself. I haven’t done a show there since 1999. It’s the best station in the West, and other than the great WFMU, the tops in all the land.

If you’re close to Foothill JC, in the SF Bay Area, tune in to 89.7FM, if you’re outside the area, please do yourself the favor and tune in any time during the show. Remember: midnight to midnight. You have no excuses.

Now, go on out and do you thang!

John Hell
Aka: Reverend Dah Wave (at least for one more night)

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! This Friday will knock your knee-sox off!
9:00 PM Door

Downtown at The Uptown Night Club
1928 Telegraph Ave.
Oakland

Our new venue is The Uptown in Oakland! 1928 Telegraph, at 19th, across from the Fox Theatre. Easy BART (1 block), and parking around the corner. All-night AC Line 800 bus to SF!

For a mere $7 you can see an amazing show in a great venue. Here's what you get:

(1) WINK PAIN
(2) SOUL CAPTIVES
(3) LORD LOVES A WORKING MAN

LORD LOVES A WORKING MAN --
Based out of the Mission District of San Francisco, Lord Loves A Working Man is a 9-piece band inspired by the raw and emotive sound of the Southern Soul shouters and horn-driven Rhythm & Blues of the 1960s. They call it Southern soul; I call it sort of "white soul", the kind of sound Blood Sweat & Tears made famous. Singer Ben Flax belts out a song and leaves you breathless. The band is led by Max Baloian (the multi-instrumentalist from Rube Waddell, the Armchair Geographers, and more). Keyboards played by Rob Reich, and if you don't know who Rob Reich is, you haven't been around much, have you? Look for Cornelius Boots blasting the hot soul sax licks. It's an awesome band. http://www.lordlovesaworkingman.com

WINK PAIN --
Heart-felt gut-wrenching blues, the kind you get when the Studebaker won't start because there's a family of muskrats living in the engine; the kind of blues you get when your old lady leaves you not for another man or another woman, but because she'd rather be alone than put up with you. Wink Pain is Freddi Price at his best, doing a solo guitar and singing old blues. http://www.rubewaddell.com

THE SOUL CAPTIVES --
A ska experience! Drawing upon diverse experiences in 1960's era Jamaican music, funk, soul, and jazz, The Soul Captives fuse together a unique musical style that they simply refer to as "the captivating sound". Varying from blazing horn-driven Skatalites style instrumentals to smoking vocal tunes with full harmonies reminiscent of Bob Marley and the Wailers, they have yet to play for a crowd that could stay in their seats.

The band began as a hobby for guitarist Vic Wong and trumpeter Josh Jerge in the summer of ‘03. Already veterans in the ska scene from Bay Area Music Award winners Monkey and Riverside soul-reggae combo the Debonaires, the two hoped to start a group that combined their two loves: jazz and Jamaican music. They had their eyes on Raynier Jacildo to man the keyboard, another talented young performer with Sacramento's reggae sensations, the Steady Ups. They also recruited local roots reggae session players Mark Allen-Piccolo (bass) and Jayme Arredondo (drums). Having backed reggae legends like Sister Nancy, Don Carlos, and Wadi Gad, the pair brings a wealth of experience and authenticity in Jamaican rhythms. To lead the group, the Captives employed the silky-smooth voices of Glenn Casuga (who doubles on tenor saxophone) and Lauren Nagel-Werd. During their first session together, the grins around the room were a clear indication that this was definitely going to be more than a side project. http://www.thesoulcaptives.com

Hello, Fellow singers and students of song!

I am very happy to say I'll be offering 4 classes at
Blue Bear School of Music for the Winter Quarter
starting 1/09/07!!

Classes on Tuesdays are: Musicianship Skills for
Singers at 7-8:00pm and Intermediate Voice from
8-9:30pm and on Thursdays: Singing For People who
Can't Sing from 7-8:00pm and Beginning Jazz Vocals
from 8:00-9:30pm. Note: there will be a showcase performance for Beginning Jazz Vocals which will include a performance with a well known and experienced accompanist. The Fall Quarter featured the singers with the wonderful Ken Muir!

For singing technique I will be teaching the Bel Canto
method which is based on a Classical singing technique but adapted
for Pop and Jazz vocals.

This method is tried and true and has produced wonderful singers for over 500 years!

For the musicianship and jazz vocals classes, I'll be
drawing on over 30 years of performance and extensive
education (including that most venerable of
institutions, the "School of Hard Knocks").

Please join me as we explore the many facets of vocal
expression that can be discovered within the
foundation of a well grounded vocal technique!

Vicki Burns has a BA in Classical Performance from the
University of New Hampshire and an MA in Improvised
Music Studies From San Jose State University. At UNH,
she studied for 4 years with Dr. Henry Wing an Oberlin
Conservatory Graduate and professional Counter Tenor,
who specialized in Renaissance Madrigals.

She has also studied with Roy Rogasin founder of the
Portsmouth Academy of Performing Arts, Portsmouth, NH.
Amherst MA., Kitty Margolis and Rebbeca Parris in San Francisco
and Barry Harris at Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH.

Currently, Vicki performs at many venues throughout
the Bay Area including The Plush Room,
The Flytap, Anna's Jazz Island, Bistro Yoffi,
The Larkspur Cafe Theatre, Cafe Trieste and Downtown.
Dance-Along Nutcracker & City Swing with Gail Wilson - Dec. 9 & 10

If you want to hear some great holiday jazz music - live, City Swing Big Band is performing at the Gala reception of the Dance-Along Nutcracker, 7 p.m., December 9 at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in SF.

Gail Wilson, City Swing's mohagany-toned singer, has agreed to perform with the group one last time since she happens to be in town this month. So if you missed her sold-out farewell concert, here's your chance!

Following the reception is the main event, the Dance-Along Nutcracker itself, and Gail Wilson also plays the lead there - Clara Stahlbaum, who's all grown up and back to tell the true story behind the Nutcracker ballet. Music is performed by the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band, the 50-piece wind ensemble named the Official Band of the City of San Francisco. Daytime shows December 9 and 10 feature Dance-Along without reception.

It's a wonderful, fun, musical way to leap into the holidays.

Show URL: www.sflgfb.org/dancealong.html

Here's more info about the show:

The San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band presents

Big Band Singer Gail Wilson in

The 2006 Dance-Along Nutcracker®: CLARA-fied!

2:30 pm & GALA 7 pm, Saturday, December 9
11 am & 3 pm, Sunday, December 10

Guest Conductor, Bradley Connlain
Choreographer Carolyn Carvajal
Gala features City Swing with Gail Wilson
Box Office: www.yerbabuenaarts.org; 415/978-ARTS
Information: www.sflgfb.org/dancealong.html; 415/255-1355

The 2006 Dance-Along Nutcracker takes a zany romp through the Nutcracker story when Clara tells all about what really happened when Drosselmeyer visited for Christmas. Performed by the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band conducted by Bradley Connlain, the wackiest Nutcracker on earth stars big band singer Gail Wilson, choreographer Carolyn Carvajal and you!

Tired of letting professional dancers have all the fun? Described by the San Francisco Chronicle’s C.W. Nevius as “inspired foolishness, tomfoolery on a grand and witty scale,” the Dance-Along Nutcracker lets the audience concoct its own choreography beneath the colored spotlights. While the Band performs Nutcracker favorites like Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and Waltz of the Flowers, sugar plum wannabes leap and pirouette about the dance floor. Tutu rentals and fairy wands are available for those with nothing to wear. Here, wallflowers have as much fun as dancers.

The Dance-Along Nutcracker is also the primary fundraiser for the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band, the Official Band of San Francisco. The Band performs at 15-20 concerts, parades and civic events throughout the year, most free of charge, and the Dance-Along supports all its activities. It’s a show that brings music to the entire community the whole year through!

This year’s Dance-Along highlights include:

· Big band singer Gail Wilson returns to the Bay Area to star as Clara, who takes the audience on an offbeat turn down memory lane.

· Conducting the Band is Guest Conductor Bradley Connlain, band leader of City Swing and music director of more than 15 community musical productions around the Bay area.

· San Francisco Opera Ballet and San Francisco Ballet veteran Carolyn Carvajal choreographs the feature dance numbers and dances as Drosselmeyer and the Rat King.

· The Opening Night Gala features a cocktail party with dancing to the big band sound of City Swing fronted by Gail Wilson.

· Corinne Levy, dancer with Dance Through Time for 12 years and a veteran of Beach Blanket Babylon, returns to the Dance-Along Nutcracker to dance as Clara.

· All performances feature Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite and other music performed by the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band, the Official Band of the City of San Francisco.

Looking for Jazz Musicians for SF Shows

I'm planning a regular show a couple times a month or more, featuring local jazz bands. Not much pay, but also not much effort, either. I'm looking for unusual performers who stretch the boundaries of jazz. Please point me to your MP3s, web pages, YouTube and MySpace pages. Thanks. More later.

Hello, Fellow singers and students of song!

I am very happy to say I'll be teaching 4 classes at
Blue Bear School Of Music for the Fall Quarter
starting 9/26/06.

Classes on Tuesdays are: Musicianship Skills for
